Child’s health

Really, how you bring up your child, starting from the time you conceive and give birth, to the time she’s a grown-up individual, has far-reaching impacts on her wellness and health quotient.

How healthy, happy and successful your child will be is totally under your control. That’s a huge responsibility but what makes it very endearing is the fact that all these life-enhancing gifts you’d love to give your child literally come for free. Its child’s play really, one that takes more understanding than effort! So here’s a primer on how to make your child intrinsically strong and healthy!Child Good Health

Start at the beginning…
When pregnant, stay stress free! Easier said than done? Yes, but its well worth it. We all know that if the mother-to-be eats well, the child is born healthy. But it is not just as simple as that. Doctors now believe that the conditions in the womb, ranging from mother’s hormones to the nutrients supplied through the placenta, determine how the baby’s liver, heart, kidneys, brain and mind will function during adulthood.

Boost her bone health
No smoking

Get this right—bone health begins early! The strength of your child’s bones is totally dependent on how you care for them now. Ninety per cent of bone growth takes place between ages 10 and 20, making it a critical time for investing in the body’s ‘bone bank’. Getting the right kind of bone-building nutrition and exercise for a child is like investing money for him in the bank. More the better!

A recent study from the US showed that about 30% of boys and only 10%ofChildrens health girls achieved the recommended daily intake (RDI) of calcium—a startling statistic that was blamed on children’s preference for soft drinks over milk. How does one set this right? A calcium supplement is not the answer. Researchers of this study (Pediatrics, Vol. 117, pp. 578-585) stressed that calcium supplements do not offer the benefits of the other 15 minerals and vitamins that a glass of milk could provide, including Vitamin D, which is well established to aid calcium absorption from the diet.

Sneak in veggies

Find it difficult to make your child even sniff the veggies? Join the club! But there is hope! A new study suggests that it is possible to crack this. All you need to do is learn to sneak them in and smartly!

To combat the ‘epidemic’ of childhood obesity, the World Health Organization recommends reducing children’s consumption of calorie dense foods. A Penn State study shows that decreasing the calorie density of foods by adding vegetables (like broccoli and cauliflower) and other lower-calorie ingredients leads to a drop in children’s calorie intake and an increase in vegetable consumption. The researchers served two variations of pasta to 61 children between 3-5 years of age. They blended broccoli and cauliflower and incorporated it into the pasta sauce and found that the kids could not really tell the difference and ate a consistent amount of pasta.

When served the lower-calorie pasta, children consumed 17 % fewer calories and ate more vegetables, compared to when they ate the higher-calorie pasta. That sure sounds like a perfect strategy to con your kid into eating veggies and improving her diet quality. But that said, researchers also encourage parents to up the consumption of vegetables by serving them on a regular basis and eating them with their children.
