No one wants a sponge face full of pores. Unfortunately, open pores is a common beauty problem that leaves the skin prone to infections, resulting in painful acne and boils.
The skin pores have the key role of providing an outlet for flushing out water, salts and toxins. When the toxic cellular waste is trapped in the skin it leads to poor skin health, infections and other disorders.
Often, when our skin pores have to cope with an unusually high and excessive secretion, they enlarge in size giving the skin an unseemly look. The otherwise invisible pores become visible to our naked eye.
Strangely, they also make our noses appear larger, especially for people with an oily skin type. Their pores are filled with excess oxidized wax or sebum.

The problem of enlarged pores is commonly associated with an oily skin type. The

production of oil in the body is regulated by male hormones. Hormonal changes—when the male hormones become overactive—in the body lead to excess oil production in the skin. The skin copes with this by opening up pores wider so that the excess oil can be flushed out. Pores also enlarge after build-up of dirt and debris, or due to breakdown of collagen in the pore wall, as we age.
External factors that result in enlarged pores
* Deliberate picking of pimples.
* Improper cleansing.
* Use of poor quality cosmetics.
What’s the way out?
One of the most common, and often effective, ways to deal with enlarged pores is to

use a toner regularly. Apply it after cleansing the face.
At-home solutions
Large pores can be easily fixed with proper cleansing and frequent toning of the skin.
* Vegetable/fruit packs and herbs help in tightening enlarged pores. Applying a pack of mashed tomatoes with a few drops of lemon juice added to it is very effective. So is a face pack of Fuller's Earth.
A face-pack recipe for enlarged pores
O 1 1.2 tablespoon of yogurt
O 1 tablespoon orange peel powder
O 1 tablespoon oatmeal
O 2 tablespoons honey
O 1 tablespoon almond oil
Mix all ingredients together, massage on to the face in circular motion for 5 to 7 minutes (avoid eyes and the area around them), rinse with warm water
* Steaming the face for 5 minutes before toning also helps. First, follow the cleansing routine and then the homecare for arresting the skin pore size.
* Don't squeeze wax plugs from the pores. It may feel good initially but they will re-fill soon.
* Mix oatmeal with cucumber juice, put it on the face for 2-3 minutes and wash it off.
Dermat procedures
There’s no one-time cure for this problem. My patients ask me for an inexpensive quick fix. Unfortunately, no such magic wand exists for this cosmetic condition. The various plant extracts, mild scrubs, toners and facials are temporary treatments for open pores. If you are comfortable with cosmetic procedures, there are a few that have proven effective in dealing with open pores.
* Regular chemical peels like TCA (trichloroacetic acid), glycolic acid and yellow peel.
Apply vegetable face packs to tighten the pores
* Mesotherapy and Mesobotox: here tiny amounts of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and Botox are injected directly into the facial skin, using very thin needles.
* Micro needling is a technique in which the face of the skin is pricked with very small needles. Simulating an injury. In response, the skin stimulates collagen production that reduces the size of the pores. Two to three sessions of micro needling, at 4 to 6 weeks interval, are quite effective.
* Radio frequency can shrink open pores quickly, with the results visible after the first session. The smaller pores are barely visible after the treatment, and the larger ones are less obvious. Repeated sessions, at monthly intervals, are required for improved and sustained results.
* Lasers, especially Erbium laser peel, also help in pore reduction.
